課程概述

This course will introduce you to translation, both CE and EC, in a variety of student selected text topics. Please do not take this course with me if you are also taking my Chinese-English Translation 中譯英. 

課程目標
1. Eliminate basic English grammatical errors, especially misuse of mass/count nouns, random tense switching, and run-on sentences.
2. Learn basic syntactical, literary and rhetorical analysis.
3. Apply #2 to CE/EC translation.
4. Develop a sense of professionalism, which is to say principled survival strategies and an understanding of the role a translator plays in society. 
課程要求
1. Come to class on time.
2. Hand in the homework on time.
3. Do the assigned reading before class and be ready to comment on it.
4. Edit your translations to eliminate basic errors, then revise with other considerations (style, concision, etc.) in mind.
5. Do not copy the work of others. Plagiarism is usually immediately obvious, and will be rewarded with an immediate fail. If you have run out of time let me know and negotiate a new due date.
6. Do not let Google Translate do your work for you. It is also usually screamingly obvious when this happens.
7. As best as you are able on a given day, give the class your full and undivided attention. This means no web-surfing via laptop or cell phone, sorry!

Douglas Robinson. Becoming a Translator: An Accelerated Course. London and New York: Routledge, 1997. This is an inspiring textbook, if a little basic and repetitive! 
參考書目
Mona Baker, In Other Words: A Coursebook in Translation. Routledge, 2011. This is a classic text, quite straightforward, built around "levels of equivalence". The latest edition has a new chapter on ethics, on the largest level: the translator in society. Check Shulin. There is a CHINESE TRANSLATION.

Anthony Pym, Exploring Translation Theories. This is very advanced, but a good challenge if you are considering going on to do translation research.

Gentzler, Edwin. Contemporary Translation Theories. Very advanced, by a deconstructionist, inspiring if you are interested in literary translation. Unfortunately, he discusses very few examples. It's very 'theoretical'.

Munday, Jeremy. Introducing Translation Studies. Straightforward.

punctuality and attendance

I may give pop quizzes on the reading, or ask you to ask a question. You've got to be there in spirit as well as in the flesh.

weekly homework 
40% 
You hand in your draft before class, we discuss a few student translations in class, then you revise in remaining class time. Typically we'll talk about the text and the translation for a couple of hours, with the last hour for revision. 
3. 
projects 
30% 
You'll translate a longer text as a group project, with a few thousand characters per student. Each student will need to give a SHORT presentation in class and participate in revision. And there will be an individual project as well. Furthermore, you'll each deliver and self-translate a short persuasion. 
4. 
class leadership

In addition to your group and individual projects, you'll each have a chance to lead the class, for the week for which you select the texts.

9/16  This week is environmental translations, selected by your instructor. You'll also read the acknowledgements and introduction to your textbook (very short). Look things up and find out something about this guy Douglas Robinson.

9/23  Robinson ch. 1 External knowledge: the user's view; If this is your week, you'll need to have your texts ready the previous week, ie. 09/16. THERE ARE ELEVEN WEEKS AND SIXTEEN STUDENTS, SO SOME OF YOU CAN TEAM UP, BASED ON DISCIPLINE OR INTEREST.
